14” Bandsaw – coplanar alignment procedure

From the afternoon session with the upper wheel mount blade adjustment component completed we can now mount the upper wheel and start adjusting them for coplanar alignment.

Google the word ‘coplanar‘.

With the upper wheel set to it’s lowest position, wheel block sitting on the bottom of the inner frame, we are making a final check to make sure the real blade (hard to see in the photo) will slip onto the wheels plus…an allowance for the tyre thickness – more on this later.

Another check at the back – looks OK.

Now to align the wheel centres with a plump bob…OK

At this early stage I can see that the lower wheel is tipping forward, we need to lower the rear shaft mount block.

This is the bottom half of the rear shaft mount, planed it down and when I checked by holding it down still way out. We need to be more aggressive…

Setup the table saw to rip a few mills off and checked again…nope take a bit more off and check again.

With the forward tipping bit out of the lower wheel, then adjusted the front-to-back position of each wheel on it’s shaft in unison with adjustment of the upper wheel blade tracking (tips the wheel forward or backwards)…and finally got everything into coplanar alignment – phew. All that took about two hours!

Went looking for the box of ALDI hose clamps to lock the wheels on their shafts and then  remembered, last time they came around I gave them a miss – bugger.

Back son...
