Telstra modem upgrade

Somehow I missed this email from Telstra back in October regarding a free modem upgrade?

Currently we are on a free 230Mbps offer for six months and I will not continue that as it costs an extra $30 - happy with 100/40.

Anyway I clicked on the out-of-date link and good thing I did.

Telstra offer - Upgrade to Superfast Internet

Telstra offer - Upgrade to Superfast Internet Add-On at no extra cost

Hi Alan,

We're excited to let you know that for a limited time we've upgraded your internet speed by giving you the Superfast Internet Add-On to your Premium Internet Plan at no additional cost (usually $30 per month) for the next 6 months.

The Superfast Internet Add-On has the potential to more than double the download speeds of your current plan's NBN Premium Evening Speed - the Superfast Internet Add-On has typical download speeds of 230Mbps (7-11pm).

Happy with 100/40 so will stay with that.

Note: The upload speed is normally above 30Mbps.

Scam telephone calls

We have a Panasonic phone system that does a good job of blocking unwanted callers.

However over the last few months the Panasonic base station has been busy announcing 'Call from private caller' and they seem to be increasing!

Google adverts begone

Got rid of the bloody thing in particular at the top of news articles.

Hosts file

Edit the hosts file in Windows/Sstem32/drivers/etc

Add two 127.0.0.1 loopback entries which basically sends those bloody host names back to the same machine.

Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 - dodgy update

We have the Gen 2 version that GSM internet AND voice backup and ET complained this afternoon that she tried to make some calls - and nothing ??? OK...ring your mobile - nothing. Ring my mobile - nothing. Hmm...we have a problem so went to log into the modem and my usual admin password is rejected...huh.

Tried the default Telstra password and that worked - something not right here ??? Clicked the button to restart the modem and again had to use the default password to login and voice line still not working. OK go downstairs to my study and pull the DC power plug, wait for a bit and power up.

Voice line now working OK but still have to login using default password so went to change that to my usual admin one which was rejected saying has to (now) be 12 characters long, I think previously 10. So likely a overnight auto update that's stuffed a few things and also reset whatever the current password was back to default - not good.

Dell switch is dead!

Not able to even access the Telstra modem downstairs in my study from the balcony AIO desktop - bugger.

The Dell 16 port switch in the linen cupboard is dead - no lights. This thing has been running for like 15 years, I did have to recap the board some years ago but apart from that - is good.

Telstra outage notice

E-mail from Telstra advising of planned outage. This sort of thing does not really effect us any more as the Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 has 4G backup - including voice!

Your Telstra service on the NBN network may be interrupted for up to 1 hour on 23 April 2019 between 10:00pm and 5:00am, as maintenance is scheduled to be performed by NBN co in your area. The service disruption will include calls, if you need to make emergency calls (000), please use your mobile or an alternative option.

What a coincidence !

Shortly after I made the last post we lost the Internet, and of course no phone - ET not happy with the latter!

Radio 3AW news update that south east areas have lost power so not the NBN this time. Think I might have another go at doing a deal with Telstra for a modem/gateway with 4G backup.

Talking turkey with Telstra

We are now out of contract with our 12 month bundle for phone, internet & Foxtel from Telstra. That means some of the Foxtel discounts are adjusted adding about $10 to the monthly cost with Entertainment, Documentaries & Movies going from $40 to $50 which is still below the normal $56 for that lot.
Some options are to remove Movies or even cancel Foxtel. Another option is to take up a new bundle like the $99 unlimited with Telstra TV and Foxtel Now for 24 months, includes a Smart Modem with 4G backup. Rang Telstra and lucky to get a switched on guy by the name of Arnel. The new bundle would not include the smart modem…hmm. Decided to cancel Foxtel so he put me on hold…waiting…came back with a offer to keep everything the same and reduce Foxtel (as before Ent, Docs & Movies) to $30 - DONE :-)

Telstra NBN speed check - still good

Interesting that customers have started complaining since Telstra implemented Unlimited (or double data) their speeds have dramatically dropped.

I DO NOT WANT NBN !!!

I was really peeved a few years ago to hear that as part of the NBN agreement Telstra would not be able to use its HFC cable network to deliver (BigPond) Internet services - only Foxtel.

nbn-cable-reel-640x360

Really…I don’t want ANOTHER cable coming in when I am very happy with what we have considering Telstra offered and sent out a free DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem! Hopefully we stay as we are and DOCSIS 3.1 is just a firmware thing – happy with that.

Internet outage

CATV-Double02-e1424779980910-850x312

BigPond cable outage - went to bed with no internet and Telstra tech visit booked this morning 8 - 12. Holly woke me before 8.0 but took no notice until alarm went off at 8.15. Better get moving, noticed modem lights were normal so logged into router and everything looks OK. Better click the SMS link on the phone to notify callback for support lady to phone me back - to cancel the booking. While chatting to her checked service status and yes there was another (unrelated to yesterday) overnight 3150 outage that was restored at 7.35am this morning - wow.
