Al's backyard chooks update

Time to change the bed linen, particularly important during the summer months. Also included is a little walk-through.

We only have two old girls left and both are 10 plus - Misty (Wyandotte) and Speckles (Pekin). I use kitty litter boxes and for each empty out most of the hay and with reading glasses on scan for mites - the buggers are tiny.

This time no movement so all clear, last time we did have a few of the little bastards. Keep reading to read about my most important defence strategy for dealing with mites

With the mite inspections done we can go ahead with the rest of the cleaning.

I have always used Pestene insect powder.

Dust the bottom of the boxes.

Clean beds (y)

I use a minimalist approach to bedroom furniture to make it harder for the tiny mites to hide - during the day. The table top is laminated including the edges. The fake woodgrain plastic legs are circa 1970 coffee table.

Note: the middle roost and chipboard bases are sealed on all edges.
