After some planning and trial layouts we now have a very sturdy frame.
Hammered a star post into each front corner and used hex head timber screws to secure the timber posts, each with a piece of paver on the bottom to keep the ends off the ground. One would think that the whole thing will wobble – but it won’t. I’ve built cat and chicken runs like this and they are solid structures that will not rock or flex.
One of my favorite building materials for projects are fence palings. They are cheap and can be used for all sorts of things – I like them. The top is removable for access, later on I’ll do the same for the front. In the right picture you can see the top on it’s side, two bits of pine hole it all together and the spacing is the same as the front gates. That funny cutout is to accommodate the funny round thing in the back left corner.
