Batman Hybrid version (part 1)

Several months of R&D culminates here with this bat by the name of SASHA. We are switching from IR controller powered by 3 X AA battery pack (plus dummy battery pack on the other side to balance the light) to USB RF controller powered by dual 2 x AA battery packs – no line of sight issues.

Last week I did some testing and measuring in particular current consumption off power supply (simulating 5V USB power) and on batteries. I am comfortable that dual 2 x AA battery boxes will provide good battery life.

Dual AA battery packs (wired in series to give 4.8V) powers the 5V USB RF controller whereas previously we had (on the right) a 3 x AA powering the IR controller with a dummy 3 x AA battery pack on the left to balance the light.

Over the last few months I've made lots of bats and this area here (his bloody head) was always the hard bit. The IR controller receiver diode needs line-of-sight to the remote control and the best location is poking up from the centre or his head.

This leaves little wiggle space for the LED strip to round around the top of the head and back inside around the name letters.

Here we are for the first time pondering where to locate the RF controller...see next MS Word screen snip.

The RF controller needs to be wired to the two battery boxes – in series.

Here's the new layout !!!

Tomorrow morning I'll cut out the controller recess and start running the LED strip around the bat and then wire up to the battery boxes.

Back soon…
