Timber Drill Vice

I don’t have any sort of bench drill vice, a machine vice is on the shopping list so in the meantime decided to make one for timber – from timber.

Cut off the turn screw from a old but hefty C clamp – which took a while.

My cut off point is where the frame meets the hub.

Didn’t bother with to many construction photos, it’s just a base with fixed end’s and a moveable jaw block.

The cut-off clamp hub has a flat which is convenient, a squeeze fit into the block will stop it turning.
Still have a bit to go to squeeze it in flush.

Drilled a hole in the jaw block for the screw pod and a keyhole cover holds it all together when opening the jaw – works fine.

Came up with this idea to not only guide but also to hold down the jaw block, in particular when it is screwed against the work piece.

The black plastic thing is a automotive U-nut with the end (top bit) cut off so acts as a ‘sled foot’.

The screw go’s up into the bottom of the jaw block, nip up and back off a fraction so the jaw slides freely, helped along with a liberal amount of silicon grease.

While giving it a tryout a thought came to mind, should cut a V groove in each jaw face for holding round stock – will do that.
