New alliance in bid to curb power prices

A national alliance of business, community and consumer groups has been formed to back new policies to curb the rise in electricity prices.

The Australian Industry Group, Brotherhood of St Laurence, CHOICE and the Energy Efficiency Council have jointly commissioned a review of options to reduce electricity prices.

The review will be officially launched in Sydney on Monday.

The alliance said a 50 per cent rise in electricity prices over the past five years showed the need for reforms to fix a broken system and ease the burden on households and businesses.

It said in a statement that the reform package should include a stronger system for regulating electricity networks, including giving the Australian Energy Regulator more powers and resources.
